Still hard news. Musical comedy 42nd Street, was supposed to open on November 21 at the Théâtre du Châtelet. The postponement of the show follows the resurgence of COVID cases in France.

Director and choreographer Stephen Mear, who choreographed the shows Mary Poppins, Funny Girl et Guys & Dolls, announced this morning on social networks. The Théâtre du Châtelet has confirmed the postponement of the show later in the afternoon. :

All is not lost: the show will be postponed until next season!

Also cancellation of the show The Song of Roland. It was an eventful start to the season for the Théâtre du Châtelet after the abrupt departure of artistic director Ruth Mackenzie.

Stephen Mear made a point of thanking the Theater which fought to try to maintain the spectacle. "We will come back stronger," he said on Twitter.

The 42nd Street phenomenon

We had the chance to discover the musical 42nd Street at the Théâtre du Châtelet in winter 2016. 42nd Street begins with the novel by Bradford Ropes. The following year, in 1933, the novel was adapted for cinema by Lloyd Bacons with the grandiose choreographies of Busby Berkeley.
It was not until 1980 that 42nd Street be adapted on stage: the show is a hit and wins big. It will close its doors after 3486 performances!
The stage adaptation uses the music from the film as well as songs that composers Dubin and Warren had written for other films of the time.

What does 42nd Street ?

Peggy Sawyer arrives in New York from her hometown of Pennsylvania, armed with her tap shoes and her head full of dreams. Peggy's talent catches the eye of legendary Broadway director Julian Marsh. He gives her a place in the chorus of "Pretty Lady", his new show. Dorothy Black, a Broadway diva, stars in the show, dislikes young Peggy. When Dorothy is injured in the previews, the show must close. Unless you find a new girl who is talented enough to lead the show - someone like Peggy Sawyer!

We hope to find the musical 42nd Street on the Châtelet stage for the 2021-2022 season!
