Summary of the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch :
When we meet Hedwig, she is performing with her band in a seedy restaurant and exclaims that she is an internationally ignored rock star. She is accompanied by her husband, assistant and backing vocalist Yitzhak, with whom she has an unhealthy relationship.
As we travel with the group, we are drawn into Hedwig's own memories as she shares her story:
Hedwig was born male as Hansel in East Berlin. Seduced by an American GI, he takes Hedwig to the United States so that she undergoes sex reassignment surgery and they can get married. But the operation is botched, leaving Hedwig with a dysfunctional inch of flesh between her legs. Her husband abandons her and Hedwig must fend for herself to find gigs and survive. Then she meets Tommy Gnosis and the two bond until Tommy steals her songs and becomes a massive rock star.
As Hedwig performs, we learn that her ultimate desire is to become a whole person by meeting her other half, as depicted in the Aristophanes mythos.
