On your toes

Junior Donal is a former vaudeville actor who now teaches music at Knickerbocker University in New York. To help patron Peggy Portefield, he undertakes to persuade Sergei Alexandrovich, director of the Russian Ballet, to stage the jazzy ballet "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue". Junior becomes romantically involved with the company's principal dancer, Vera Barnova. He is forced to play the title role of "Slaughter". It infuriates Vera's lover, who is her usual dance partner, that he hires two thugs to kill Junior while he is performing on stage.
