Based on Alice Walker's 1982 novel of the same name, The Color Purple spans 35 years in the life of Celie, an African-American teenager living in Georgia, whom her abusive stepfather forced to marry a even more violent man. Celie spends her days as a servant in her own home and is separated from her relatives by her husband. She tries to keep hope of finally finding her sister Nettie and her children through her stepfather.
Over the years, Celie, more and more tired of her plight, finds ways to overcome obstacles - she becomes the lover of jazz singer Shug Avery. Many years later, Celie finally left her husband and took refuge in Memphis with Shug where she created her pants-making business which became a flourishing business. Despite her unfortunate events, Celie understands that she is a survivor and no matter what happens to her, she is strong.
