The musical features a score by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a libretto by Arthur Laurents. For his original production, Jerome Robbins signed the direction and choreography of the show.
The story is a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare.
The show opened on Broadway in 1957 and was quickly adapted into a film in 1961. Robert Wise was chosen to direct the film. Having no experience with musical films, he called on Jerome Robbins to direct the singing and dancing sequences. The production company, worried about the production costs spent by Jerome Robbins, fired him. Robert Wise insisted that the choreographer be given the title of co-director.
The film was a huge success and won 10 Academy Awards, the record for a musical film.
Rita Moreno won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, the first time a Spanish-American actress has won an Oscar.
