American Idiot follows a young anti-hero, Johnny, the so-called "Jesus of the suburbs", and his two friends, Will and Tunny. They are trying to get out of their threatening suburban existence.
Johnny escapes into town and finds himself involved in a passionate affair with a young woman. Unfortunately, he will have an even more exciting affair with the hard drugs.
Tunny finds a purpose by enlisting in the military, but is injured on duty, both physically and emotionally.
Meanwhile, Will, who has stayed in the suburbs with his newly pregnant girlfriend, is anchored to his couch.
Each strives to find the balance between rage and love - a conflict that defines their generation.
