Summary :
We are in Louisiana in 1963.
Caroline is an African American maid from the Gellman Jewish household. Although poorly paid, she works tirelessly in their stuffy basement. The household appliances that surround his work come to life: the washing machine, the dryer and the radio. The objects sing and come and comment on Caroline's situation.
For Noah, Gellman, the family's 8-year-old son, the basement is a fantastic place. He spends as much time there as possible to see Caroline.
Noah leaves his change (in English: “change”) in his pockets which Caroline finds and leaves in a bowl above the machine.
Noah's stepmother Rose, who is unable to give Caroline a raise, tells her that she can keep the money Noah leaves in her pockets. Caroline refuses to take money from a child. But Caroline is divorced and the mother of 4 children: she knows that she needs this money for her family.
At the same time in the United States, we learn of the assassination of JFK. The social progress observed in the country is being set in motion… Change is coming.
Check out the song "Lot's Wife", amazingly performed by Sharon D. Clarke:
