The People's Fronde against Cardinal Mazarin is bloodily suppressed to the sound of cannons. The young Louis is crowned King in Reims but the power is confiscated from him by Mazarin and his mother, Anne of Austria, who wonder about his capacities to reign one day.
Louis discovers love with Marie Mancini, an Italian immigrant without birth. The young monarch had to assert himself and went to war, but he suffered from a serious illness. He is said to be dead and the Court forgets him to turn to his brother.
All the same, the miracle operates: a doctor tries a poison and Louis comes back to life. The King falls head over heels in love with Mary and asks her to marry but everyone is against this union. Anne of Austria and Mazarin put an end to the dream by condemning Marie to exile then by forcing the young King to marry the Infanta of Spain.
On the death of Mazarin. Louis takes power and becomes The Sun King. He will get lost in the arms of many women forgetting his people who will pay a heavy price for the construction of a disproportionate dream, Versailles.
Louis will finally end up accomplishing much more than his destiny as King: his destiny as a man.
