Avignon OFF: Broadway review, crimes and botany

[yasr_overall_rating]

Me who loves the musical Little Shop of Horrors Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, I was disappointed with this show.

As I was a little reluctant to go see this musical that I love so much, I spoke to one of the actors before the show who warned me that most of them were amateurs and were accountants or whatever in their professional life. A good part of the actors come out of Cours Simon in Paris but the level is not very high.

This version is an adaptation of the film Little Shop of Horrors Roger Corman released in 1960 and covers some of the songs composed by Alan Menken; only the end is different.
It was the director Cécile Parichet who translated the original 1960 film by Roger Corman and it's a real challenge because French translations of musicals are always complicated; yet we are not doing too badly because the viewer still manages to follow the plot.

The actors find it difficult to follow the soundtrack (which is always restrictive at the Festival because many shows cannot play live music) and this also impacts the choreographies which seem disorderly.
A positive point of this show is the actress Ophélie Bernard who plays the plant, Audrey Junior, and who brings a lot of energy to the performance!

With 10 actors performing 20 characters, songs and choreography sometimes accompanied by a live trumpet, this production misses its humorous message and seems unfinished.

The show is played until July 29 at the Théâtre de l'Ange in Avignon so if you want to book, it's this way.
