Review - Heathers at the Theater Royal Haymarket

[yasr_overall_rating]

Based on the cult 1989 film, the musical has been delighting fans since the beginning of September.

The cast of Heathers in action!

The show begins as soon as you arrive at the theater: die-hard fans of the film wear the costumes of the Heathers, music from the 1980s playing at full volume in the room and we find ourselves singing 'Take On Me' by A-Ha!

Not being particularly a fan of the film, I found myself in the middle of groupies who knew lines and music by heart and did not hesitate to express their joy at hearing certain cult lines "Well, fuck me gently with a chainsaw!" (Translated Kiss me tenderly with a chainsaw). The public is sometimes so noisy that we miss lines!
In short, we quickly understand that we are dealing with a somewhat heavy musical.

The story

The plot is quite dismal: In a suburban American high school, Veronica finds herself integrated into the group of popular Heathers who rule the school. Veronica becomes popular and manipulative and falls under the spell of JD, the "dark brown" of the high school who is not very clear. Together, they go to commit crimes against their high school bullies and Veronica becomes haunted by her victims.
The musical covers serious subjects: harassment, the need to comply and suicide among adolescents.

After a success in Los Angeles and Off-Broadway, the musical became a huge fan base who knew the music by heart and despaired to review the musical on stage.

It's Laurence O'Keefe, best known for his musical Legally Blonde who composed the music for Heathers with a booklet by Kevin Murphy. Together, they manage to transcribe on stage the absurdity of the 80s illustrated in the film.

Pop-rock songs are a good addition, even if they are not always justified. They allow comic moments ("I Love My Dead Gay Son") and to discover a little more certain characters ("Kindergarten Boyfriend"). The music is sometimes not very light and we sometimes wait for certain scenes to end.

The music also highlights the vocal prowess of Carrie Hope Fletcher, the vlogger-actress-singer-writer who has superb energy and whose role goes like a glove! His voice fills the theater and delights our ears.
We also applaud the performances of Jodie Steele (Heather Chandler), Jamie Muscato (JD), Jenny O'Leary (Martha Dunnstock) and the incredible Rebecca Lock (Ms Flemming).

The cast is incredible and full of energy: it is good to see a young, united and bubbly team. The musical is quirky and funny even if a little heavy and sometimes not very fair. The staging is colorful and the choreography energetic.

I recommend it for fans of musical comedy and fans of the film!
