Review – I Will Love You

The musical I will love you is it worth the detour: the answer in our review! The show based on Sardou's songs is on tour throughout France until 2023 and at the Seine Musicale from May to June 2022.

Big disappointment

The musical I will love you was however promising. It follows a group of friends who board the liner France and take us through the ages and continents to the rhythm of Sardou's music. Unfortunately, neither the story nor the staging managed to convince us.

A pretext for song

This is where the real problem lies. I will love you. Throughout the performance we understand that this show is only a pretext for song. The story is without head or tail. Absolutely keen to give meaning to all of Sardou's words, the story goes back and forth between Paris, Le Havre and New York.
Two rambling lines of dialogue introduce a new song and the comedy is often forced.
The interpreters, mostly from The Voice and La Nouvelle Star sing well (and loud!). They do their best to try to make sense of a very weak libretto. However, we do not believe in their semblance of revolt nor in their love stories.

In addition, we regret that the songs are accompanied by a soundtrack. Live musicians would have allowed the performers not to have to chase after the soundtrack or wait for it at the end of the scenes.

All is not lost, two songs, "La Java de Broadway" and "Jazz Singer" interpreted by Hobbs, come to save the day. These two moments allow rhythmic and colorful choreographies. But this pleasure is only too short on a show of almost 3 hours...

A staging to review

Whether it's the women dancing in burkas or the threesome that introduces "La Maladie d'Amour", we are more embarrassed than satisfied by this spectacle. With such a production, we expected to take the view, but visually, we remain unsatisfied. We also regret the separation of singers and dancers. These allow to give a little life to the show but are relayed in the background.

The power of Sardou

It's always nice to listen to Sardou but the form of the show needs to be reviewed. A musical review would surely have been better suited.
We must all the same applaud that after the Covid, a show manages to make nearly 6000 spectators sing in chorus during the salutes. Because yes, Sardou fans will be delighted to hear “Les Lacs du Connemara” and will waddle in their seats to the sound of “Popular balls” and “Being a woman”.
But fans of musicals will be disappointed...

You will have understood it in this review, we did not fall sick with love for the musical I will love you. And you, what did you think of the show?
