Michael Ball will be Edna Turnblad in "Hairspray" at the London Coliseum

The musical Hairspray will be playing at the Coliseum in London in 2020. Michael Ball will reprise the role of Edna Turnblad. He played this role from 2007 to 2009. For his performance, he won an Olivier Award and a Whatsonstage Award.

He already played at the Coliseum in 2018 in Chess and later this year, he joined the new all-star production of Les Misérables. He will play the role of Javert at the Gielgud Theater.

The musical Hairspray is based on the 1988 film of the same name in which Divine and Ricki Lake appeared. The play opened on Broadway in 2002 and won 8 Tony Awards.
The plot is set in Baltimore in 1962, where Tracy Turnblad dreams of dancing on television. While the United States is in the midst of social upheaval, she fights so that her colored friends can dance with her.
The musical includes the numbers: "You Can't Stop the Beat", "Good Morning Baltimore" and "Big, Blonde and Beautiful".

The show will be on the bill for 12 weeks starting April 23, 2020. Jack O'Brien directs while Jerry Mitchell choreographs.
Another production of the musical will be on British tour at the same time.
