The punk-rock opera will be at Seine Musicale in September 2020, more than 40 years after the original production.
Written in 1976, it includes a score by Michel Berger and lyrics by Luc Plamondon.
The music for the show was first recorded in the studio and the album was released in 1978. It included Daniel Balavoine, France Gall, Diane Dufresne, Éric Estève, René Joly, Fabienne Thibeault and Nanette Workman. The album is a success and has sold over 2,2 million copies in France alone.
The show was then staged at the Palais des Congrès in 1979 by Tom O'Hargan (who staged Hair et Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway).
Starmania reimagined
Starmania imagine a dystopia in the future where Europe is no more than one country called the West. opera brings together politics, love and destiny.
For this very special cover, it will be Thomas Jolly who will be directing and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui will reinvent the choreography.
We know Thomas Jolly for his grandiose productions and his reimaginations of classics like Richard III, Henry VI et Thyestes. He created a lot with his company Piccola Familia both as a director and actor. His work is notably seen at the Festival d'Avignon, the TNB, the Théâtre National de Strasbourg and the Odeon.
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is a Belgian dancer and choreographer. He has already won 2 Olivier Awards, 3 Ballet Tanz Awards for Best Choreographer and the KAIROS Prize in 2009. He works all around the globe (Tokyo, Antwerp, London, etc.). Since 2015, he has been the artistic director of the Royal Ballet of Flanders.

Luc Plamondon, the lyricist, has announced that there will be some changes from the original production. The character Guru Marabout will transform into "a little Greta". Some songs will be reintroduced into the show.
The show will therefore be at the Seine Musicale from September 22 to December 30, 2020. The castings are in progress and we can't wait to discover the cast!
