Sunday in the Park with George arrives in London with Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford

Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's musical will be on stage at the Savoy Theater in May 2020. The musical is inspired by the painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by pointillist painter George Seurat.

Sunday in the Park with George opened on Broadway in 1984, and won 8 Drama Desk Awards. She also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The cast included Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters in the two main roles.

Jake Gyllenhaal, known on the big screen for his roles in Zodiac, Night Call et Brokeback Mountain will interpret George. Annaleigh Ashford (Legally Blonde, Wicked, Kinky Boots for which she won a Tony Award) will be Dot.

The plot follows the three months leading up to the completion of Seurat's painting. Obsessed with the detail of his painting such as “Finishing the Hat”, he despises his fellow artists, despises the borough and his muse, Dot. He then does not realize that his actions will affect his descendants.

This production opened in 2017 on Broadway and was critically acclaimed and dazzled spectators. , the transfer that followed dazzled the audience and drew critical praise. It is one of the best-selling musicals on Broadway, grossing over $ 10 million.

The show will be on the stage of the Savoy Theater for 16 weeks from May 2020.
