Jagged Little Pill wins Grammy for Best Musical Album

On March 14, 2021 the prestigious Grammy Awards took place. The musical Jagged little pill emerged victorious.

The Grammy Awards for the musical?

You probably know the Grammy Awards, the American awards ceremony which rewards the best American musical artists.

The evening was marked by Beyoncé who won the 28th trophy of her career, making her the most awarded female artist in Grammy history! In the middle of the 84 categories rewarding country music to R'n'B, only one Grammy Award rewards the Best Musical Theatre Album.
This year, 6 musical theatre albums were in the running for the trophy: Amélie, American utopia, The Prince of Egypt, Little Shop of Horrors, Soft Power et Jagged little pill.

From album to musical to album

You oughta know that the musical Jagged little pill is based on the album of the same name by Alanis Morissette; album that won several Grammy Awards. In 1995, 21 years old Alanis Morissette released her third album entitled Jagged little pill. The album was nominated for 9 Grammy and won 4 including Best Album.
25 years later, the album is adapted into a musical! Then the album of Jagged little pill wins the Grammy Award for Best Musical Album. The circle is complete !

Tom Kitt, the orchestrator and musical director of the show accepted the award. During his speech, he brought a message of support for Broadway artists. "To all my fellow theater artists, stay strong, hold on to hope, and I can't wait to be back on stage with you."

A hit on Broadway

The musical had its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard. Then the show opens on Broadway at the end of 2019.
The musical achieved 15 Tony Award nominations. But the 2020 Tony Awards still haven't taken place!
Unfortunately the pandemic stopped performances in March 2020. But the show has already planned to reopen in June 2021! And you can book your tickets here.

Jagged Little Pill, what is it all about?

The musical follows the stories of a suburban American family. If on the surface, the family looks perfect, their well-buried secrets will soon explode. The mother, Mary Jane, becomes addicted to drugs. The adopted daughter, Frankie is searching for her voice and sexuality. The son, Nick, who is trying to be the perfect child is faced with a dilemma when his best friend is raped.
This powerful musical brings to light serious subjects to the sound of the music of Alanis Morissette.
