Broadway theaters closed until 2021

This is the hard news that came out yesterday.
The Broadway League, the professional organization of Broadway theaters, announced on Monday June 29 that theaters would not reopen until January 3, 2021.

In the press release, Thomas Schumacher, Chairman of the Broadway League writes:

“Every member of our community is eager to get back to work, sharing stories that inspire our audiences through the transformative power of a shared live experience. The safety of artists, technicians, orchestras and audiences is our highest priority and we look forward to returning to our stages as soon as it is safe. One thing is certain, when we return, we will be stronger and more needed than ever. "

It was also announced that all tickets through January 3 will be refunded or canceled.

Many Broadway actors on social media expressed their sadness and dismay. Like us, it was through newspaper articles and social media that they learned that the shows would not resume.
A hard blow for the artists and for Equity, the union of workers in the performing arts who were not notified of this postponement.

Here a tweet from Jessica Vosk, who played Elphaba in the musical Wicked on Broadway:

The situation on Broadway

All 41 Broadway theaters have been closed since March 12.
As of this date, 31 productions were showing, 8 in previews and 8 in rehearsals.
Since then, several productions, such as Frozen, Beetlejuice et Hangmen, have announced that they will not be returning to Broadway.
Others, such as The Music Man, 1776 et Carolina, or Change have announced postponements of a year or more. All this will depend on the next government announcements.

This also follows the announcement that most theaters in London will remain closed until 2021. Cirque du Soleil, having been unable to receive any income since the end of the shows, had to file for bankruptcy on Monday.
A real blow for the theater industry which is experiencing a "Cultural disaster" according to an Oxford Economics study.
