The musical Come From Away will soon be available for the small screen. The release is scheduled for September 2021. An important date, which will mark 20 years since the attacks of September 11, 2001.
Filmed live from Broadway
We announced the film adaptation of the show in a previous article, and we now have more information.
Distribution company Entertainment One will produce and film the show. For this capture, the original Broadway cast will be reunited on the stage of the Schoenfeld Theater. The show will be filmed live on stage in May.
But unlike the first announcements, which planned for the movie to be filmed in Gander with thousands of extras and to hit the big screen, the film will not be released in theaters. It will be available for the small screen, so you can experience it from your sofa in September.
Director Christopher Ashley, who won the Tony Award for directing Come From Away, will direct the film.
One of the most moving musicals
The musical tells the incredible story of the inhabitants of Gander, a small town in Canada, which in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks accommodated thousands of passengers. The show offers a superb message of hope and brotherhood in such difficult times. A message that still resonates today.
Spouses Irene Sankoff and David Hein wrote the musical based on testimonials from passengers and residents of Gander.

A success on Broadway and internationally
On Broadway, the show opened in 2017 and won the hearts of New York audiences but also the Tony for Best Director. It won theatrical awards, particularly in the Best Musical and Best Direction categories.
The transferred to Toronto, Sydney and London in 2019. We had the chance to see the show in London and you can find our review of Come From Away here. (spoiler: we loved it!)
